Bikes Against Bullies – #BAB2015
When Sq’ewá:lxw was considering different charities to make donations to this Christmas season, I suggested that we sponsor this year’s Bikes Against Bullies ride. The connections were too obvious to ignore: suicide touches First Nations youth at a rate many times that of the national average, most Indigenous people have experienced some type of bullying because of their heritage, and the sexual exploitation of young Indigenous women continues to be ignored by the federal government. While the Amanda Todd Legacy Society doesn’t have a specific mandate to assist Indigenous youth, they make efforts to help everyone who suffers from bullying or sexual exploitation, regardless of race.
A decision was made to make a $5000 donation to the Bikes Against Bullies ride and, as a result, the ride will now wind up at Sq’ewá:lxw in Stó:lō territories on July 26th.
